INSTRUCTIONS TO THE EPHESIAN ASSEMBLY "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making MELODY in your heart to the lord" Ephesians 5:19 NOTE: The MELODY comes from the heart - no mention of the melody coming from instrumental accompaniment. Conybeare and Howson in their book entitled, “The Life and Epistles of St. Paul", give us a very good translation of Eph.5: 19. INSTRUCTIONS TO THE COLOSSIAN ASSEMBLY "let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to thelord." Colossians 3:16 “Singing with grace" is rendered “singing with thanksgiving". INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CORINTHIAN ASSEMBLY “What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also.” 1 Cor.14:15. BABYLONISH SYSTEMS According to Rev.18:22, musical instruments are connected with Babylon as the following verse indicates: "And the voice of harpers, and the musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters shall be heard no more in thee." In Rev.18:21, judgment is pronounced upon Babylon. CALL TO SEPARATION FROM BABYLON "Come out of her my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not her plagues." SUMMARY The scriptures in Ephesus, Colossians and Corinthians present to us the POSITIVE instructions about singing in the Assemblies which are seeking to maintain the divine principles pleasing to the Lord. In Rev.18, we get the NEGATIVE teaching about music in the Assembly. Babylon is generally regarded as the religious confusion in the world. This will assume even more specific aspects after the saved ones are called home (raptured by the coming of the Lord). There is a divine principle for us even NOW to "COME OUT OF HER." This coming out of her NOW involves many aspects, which includes the question of instrumental music.
