I wish to be very careful in my response to your question about musical instruments in assembly gatherings. This is a question that people approach with great emotion. In our New Testament, we do not find any verses that give us permission to use musical instruments in our assembly gatherings. Nor do we find verses that specifically forbid their use. In such cases we must look at principles found in the word of God. I believe the principle regarding musical instruments is found in connection with the Tabernacle. When we read the instructions for the building of the tabernacle in Exodus 25 to Exodus 40, there are no instructions for the making and using of musical instruments. The tabernacle speaks of the glories of Christ and all man’s achievements were to be put aside when Christ is being exalted. As well, when we read of priestly service in Leviticus in connection with worship, again we find no provision for musical instruments. I believe that a student of the word of God, in his studies of the tabernacle will confirm this. David in Psalm 92:3 and Psalm 57:8 speaks of using musical instruments in his praise to God. But when we examine these references we find that this was not done in the gathering of the congregation, but in private. Even today, Christians continue to do this. There are only eight references to music or singing in the New Testament prior to the book of the Revelation. And they are as follows: Matthew 26:30, Acts 16:25, Romans 15:9, 1Corinthians 14:15, Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16, Hebrews 2:12, James 5:13. The most reliable authorities and scholars of the Greek language admit that there is nothing in either the text, or context, of these scriptures that would express even the slightest suggestion of musical accompaniment. On the contrary, the melody is distinctly stated to be in the heart of the singer. And the Knox version of the New Testament, which comes from the Latin manuscripts, states that this is singing with the lips.
