It is impossible to overestimate the power of speech. It was by the word of God that the universe was established, and it is by the same word that it remains unto this day. Now we know that those powerful words spoken at the beginning of time were spoken by the Word of God, the eternal Son.	언어능력의 힘을 과대평가하는 것은 무리다. 우주가 세워진 것은 하나님의 말씀에 의한 것이었으며, 오늘날까지 남아있는 것은 동일한 말씀에 의한 것이다. 이제 우리는 태초에 말씀하신 그분의 강력한 말씀이 영원한 아들이신 하나님의 말씀에 의해 이루어졌다는 것을 알게 되었다.
Age followed age, and from generation to generation the patriarchs and the nation of Israel rejoiced to hear “the word of the LORD.” What authority it spoke, what revelation it brought, and what comfort to those in despair! Yet the greatest advancement in communication came with the incarnation of Jesus Christ. No longer would people wait to hear the truth of God conveyed by proxy, but now they could hear it from the lips of God Himself. His were lips into which grace was poured. When Christ spoke grace, He did not compromise truth, and when He spoke truth, He spoke it with grace. Neither was dominant on His blessed lips – He was filled full of both.	세월이 흐르면서 족장들과 이스라엘 민족은 여러 세대에 걸쳐 “주님의 말씀”을 듣고 기뻐했다. 어떤 권위로 말씀하셨으며, 어떤 계시를 가져왔으며, 절망에 빠진 사람들에게 어떤 위로가 되었는가! 그러나 의사소통의 가장 큰 발전은 예수 그리스도의 성육신으로 이루어졌다. 더 이상 사람들은 대리인을 통해 전달된 하나님의 진리를 듣고자 기다리지 않았지만 이제는 하나님 자신의 입술에서 진리를 들을 수 있었다. 그분의 입술에는 은혜가 부어졌다. 그리스도께서 은혜를 말씀하실 때, 진리를 타협하지 않았으며, 진리를 말씀할 때 은혜로 말씀하셨다. 그분의 복된 입술로 영향력을 행사하는 것이 없었다. 그분은 은혜와 진리 두 가지로 가득 차 있었다.
The speech of Christ was so distinct that the men who were sent to arrest Him were themselves arrested. “No one ever spoke like this man!” they exclaimed. His voice comforted the broken, illuminated the ignorant, humbled the proud, and enlivened the dead. How differently He sounded from those around Him, for sin had spoiled the speech of humans. When they followed the Great Liar and abandoned the truth, the speech of men and women could not be trusted. Soon their tongues began to utter a flood of passions that could not be controlled. Moral corruption, hatred, deceit, crudity, profanity and their many allies became the regular communications on this rebel planet.	그리스도의 담화는 너무나 분명했기 때문에 그분을 체포하도록 보내진 사람들이 스스로 체포되었으며 “아무도 이 사람처럼 말한 적이 없다!”라고 그들은 소리쳤다. 그분의 목소리는 상한 자들을 위로하고, 무지한 자들에게 비추고, 교만을 낮추고, 죽은 자에게 활기를 불어 넣었다. 죄가 인간의 말투를 망쳐 놓았기 때문에 그분 주변의 사람들과는 얼마나 다르게 들렸는가. 그들이 능숙한 거짓말쟁이를 따라 진리를 버렸을 때 남녀의 말들을 신뢰할 수 없었다. 곧 그들의 혀는 억제할 수 없는 격정의 홍수를 터뜨리기 시작했다. 도덕적 부패, 증오, 속임수, 부정, 불경 및 그들의 많은 동맹들은 이 반역의 행성에서 정기적인 의사소통이 되었다.
In Christ, God not only established a beach-head for truth and grace but liberally sowed His new sons and daughters into this alien world. These, who once felt at home in the world of corrupt communications, were now changed. They had been made alive together with Christ (Eph 2:5), and they had been raised with Him through faith (Col 2:12). In his letters to the saints at Ephesus and Colosse, Paul highlights the impact that grace has on how they now speak to believers and unbelievers.	그리스도 안에서 하나님은 은혜와 진리의 교두보를 세우셨을 뿐만 아니라 그분의 새로운 아들과 딸들을 이 이질적인 세상에 널리 퍼뜨리셨다. 한때 부패한 의사소통의 세상에서 느꼈던 이것들은 이제 바뀌었다. 그들은 그리스도와 함께 살리셨고(엡 2:5), 믿음으로 그분과 함께 일으키셨다(골 2:12). 바울은 에베소와 골로새의 성도들에게 보낸 편지에서 은혜가 현재 신자와 불신자들에게 말하는 방식에 따라 미치는 영향을 강조한다.
Words of Grace to Believers “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear” (Eph 4:29 ESV). Words of grace are uniting. To the Ephesians Paul presents the church as a body growing up to the Head. To facilitate this growth to the unity of the faith, Christ has given men as gifts to the body. The apostles and prophets have spoken the truth about grace as a foundation to the church, and the preachers and teachers have built this truth into each succeeding generation. Grace is not only the subject of the truth but also the way in which it is to be communicated to each other. Speaking the truth will strengthen the unity of the faith and speaking it with grace will help to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.	신자들에게 은혜의 말씀 “부패한 대화는 결코 너희 입 밖으로 내지 말고 오직 세워 주는 일에 쓸 좋은 것만을 말하여 그것이 듣는 자들에게 은혜를 끼치게 하라”(엡 4:29). 은혜의 말씀은 연합시킨다. 바울은 에베소 사람들에게 머리에게까지 자라는 몸으로 교회를 표현한다. 믿음의 연합으로 이러한 성장을 촉진시키기 위해 그리스도께서는 몸에 대한 은사로서 사람들에게 주셨다. 사도들과 선지자들은 교회의 기초로서 은혜에 대한 진리를 말했으며, 설교자와 교사들은 이 진리를 다음 세대에게 세워주었다. 은혜는 진리의 주제 일뿐만 아니라 그것이 서로에게 전달되는 방식이기도 하다. 진리를 말하는 것은 믿음의 연합을 튼튼하게 하고 은혜롭게 말하는 것은 평화의 결속 속에서 성령의 연합을 보존하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.
Words of grace are honest. There is nothing that destroys relationships as quickly as the dishonest words that characterize the ungodly. Grace will put away all such falsehood and speak the truth to our fellow members. If deception is discovered between believers, it will give the devil an opportunity to drive a wedge of bitterness between those whom the Spirit has united in Christ.	은혜의 말씀은 정직하다. 불경건한 것을 특징 짓는 부정직한 말만큼 빨리 관계를 파괴하는 것은 없다. 은혜는 그러한 거짓을 모두 없애고 동료들에게 진실을 말할 것이다. 신자들 사이에 속임수가 발견되면, 성령이 그리스도 안에서 연합한 사람들 사이에 쓰라린 쐐기를 박을 수 있는 기회를 마귀에게 줄 것이다.
Words of grace are pure. Many of the world’s words are dirty and doubtful. The lurid practices of the Greco-Roman world of Paul’s generation are being repeated by the liberal societies of our generation. The dialogue of films, lyrics of songs, jokes of comedians, and memes of the internet are full of corruption. Such unholy talk must be avoided or else it will grieve the Holy Spirit within us.	은혜의 말씀은 순수하다. 세상의 많은 말이 더럽고 의심스럽다. 바울 시대의 그리스 로마 세계의 끔찍한 관행은 우리 시대의 자유주의 사회에 의해 반복되고 있다. 영화의 대화, 노래의 가사, 개그맨들의 농담 및 인터넷의 문화 속에는 부패로 가득 차 있다. 그러한 거룩하지 않은 말은 피해야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 그것은 우리 안에 있는 성령님을 슬프게 할 것이다.
Words of grace are forgiving. God, by His grace, forgave all our sins, and we have now the opportunity to extend the God-like grace of forgiveness to others. No member of Christ’s body should maintain an unforgiving grudge against a fellow member.	은혜의 말씀은 용서한다. 하나님은 그분의 은혜로 우리의 모든 죄를 용서하셨으며, 이제는 하나님처럼 용서의 은혜를 다른 사람들에게 확대할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 되었다. 그리스도의 몸의 어떤 구성원도 동료 구성원에 대한 용서할 수 없는 원한을 유지해서는 안 된다.
Words of Grace to Unbelievers “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Col 4:6 ESV). Words of grace are powerful. To the Colossians Paul presents Christ as the Head of the body, from Whom the life of every member flows down. Such liberating life enables each believer to be free from the bondage of sin and superstition. The changed and counter-cultural life of a believer becomes a powerful witness in the societies in which they live.	불신자들에게 은혜의 말씀 “너희 말을 소금으로 간 맞추어 항상 은혜롭게 하라. 그리하면 너희가 각 사람에게 어떻게 마땅히 대답해야 할지 알게 되리라”(골 4:6). 은혜의 말씀은 강력하다. 골로새 사람들에게 바울은 그리스도를 몸의 머리로 제시한다. 그러한 해방된 삶은 각각의 신자들이 죄와 미신의 속박에서 자유로울 수 있게 해준다. 신자의 변화되고 반문화적인 삶은 그들이 살고 있는 사회에서 강력한 증거가 된다.
Words of grace are fitting. There are many ways of turning everyday conversations to the hope of the gospel, yet our attitude must also be colored by the grace that saved us. A Christ-like patience and courtesy might open the door to personal witness, but a pushy or rude manner will probably slam it shut.	은혜의 말씀이 어울린다. 일상의 대화를 복음의 희망으로 바꾸는 방법은 여러 가지가 있지만, 우리의 태도 또한 우리를 구원한 은혜로 물들어야 한다. 그리스도와 같은 인내심과 예의는 개인적인 증언의 문을 열 수도 있지만, 강압적이거나 무례한 태도는 아마도 문을 닫을 것이다.
Words of grace are measured. Not every dish needs salt, and even if it does, we need to learn how much to add so that the dish will not be ruined. Likewise, not every conversation can be turned to speak of spiritual things. Sometimes an unwise presentation of the truths of the gospel can spoil the opportunity for further dialogue.	은혜의 말씀은 평가된다. 모든 요리에 소금이 필요한 것은 아니며, 설사 소금이 필요한 경우에도 요리가 못쓰게 되지 않도록 얼마나 더 넣어야 하는지 알아야 한다. 마찬가지로, 모든 대화도 영적인 것을 말하도록 바뀔 수 있는 것은 아니다. 때때로 복음의 진리를 지혜롭게 제시하지 않으면 더 대화 할 수 있는 기회를 놓칠 수 있다.
Words of grace are timely. Christ, the Great Soul-Winner, spoke grace by telling the truth. But He sometimes showed grace and moved on. We must develop the wisdom to know when to show grace and when to speak grace. Thus, grace on the lips of a believer can give a soft answer that turns away the wrath of an unbeliever who is opposed to the gospel. But words carelessly spoken can be like pearls cast before pigs and can make an unbeliever even more hostile to the truth.	은혜의 말씀은 시기적절하다. 위대한 영혼의 승리자이신 그리스도께서는 진리를 말함으로써 은혜를 말씀하셨다 . 그러나 때때로 은혜를 보여주시며 나아가셨다 . 우리는 언제나 은혜를 베풀어야 하고, 언제 은혜를 말해야 하는지를 아는 지혜를 길러야 한다. 그러므로 믿는 자의 입술에 은혜는 복음에 반대하는 믿지 않는 사람의 분노를 물리치는 부드러운 대답을 줄 수 있다. 그러나 함부로 말한 말들은 돼지 앞에 던져진 진주처럼 믿지 않는 사람들에게 진리에 더욱 적대적으로 만들 수 있다.
